West Ashley is located west of the Ashley River and nearby the historic Charleston peninsula. It is considered one of the six main areas of Charleston SC. Its historic Charleston southern architecture with big white pillars and wrap around porches give it much of its charm. One can tour the area and the rest of Charleston by a carriage tour to give it even more of a fairytale feel. Other ways to soak in the scenery of Charleston are walking along the Charleston Waterfront Park or visit the famous Angel Oak tree. West Ashley is an ideal location for shoppers because it houses the largest shopping mall in its region- the Citadel Mall. It conveniently also has many other shopping centers and plazas. A few places to visit include the Ashley Hall Plantation- a plantation built in the 1670s, and the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens- an astonishing plantation built on scenic gardens. Both of these must-sees are registered on the National Register of Historic Places. There are also many other historic plantations to tour in the area. One can even make touring the plantations a day trip and tour them all together with a tour guide. West Ashley and the greater Charleston area is home to a number of incredible eats. A few of the best in West Ashley are the Sunflower Café, Famulari’s Pizza West Ashley, and the Charleston Sports Pub. The area offers a number of annual events that celebrate art, culture, and music. West Ashley is full of life and culture and while it is apart of Charleston, it has its own characteristics that make the larger Charleston area seem less overwhelming to those wanting to settle in Charleston.
